How
we got here...
We
believe nothing is as important as a regular regular; family (this includes four-legged members) and friends are the only way to measure wealth; and
where you came from is a good indication of where you are going!
Our
love affair with providing people a comfortable place to hang out
began way back on Central Avenue with Sarasota's second 'coffee
shop' Central Perk (a small coffee-shop slash pizza place called Emphasis
had come and gone before we opened). This is way back when people
questioned why we would offer iced-coffee (with coffee ice cubes so
it wouldn't water down). We had big, soft chairs an upright piano.
Poetry slams, Liquid Crunch Tower, Sade, Nick Kraastner, and lots of
other fabulous musicians played to the most eclectic group of people
to gather in Sarasota. We were the first night-time business in the
Rosemary District. However, after a few sketchy happenings, we moved
downtown, which also helped accommodate our large following.
On Main Street,
we took over the site of Monterey
Deli and opened a small cafe. We specialized in giant sandwiches,
incredible red potato salad, and homemade soups (we think
our Chef Frani
started the Italian Wedding Soup craze as it wasn't even available
in the Italian restaurants at that point)! The deli was fun, but we
missed our late night crowd and live music.
A
trip to Italy, specifically Taoramina helped us perfect our idea of
the perfect pub. Just in time for College Crawl™ in March of
1998, we reopened our deli as a European-style pub specializing in
Belgian beers. We brought in Delerium Tremins draught (the first in
Florida) and things took off from there. We continued with live
music (we were cited by the downtown police a number of times) and
added a superior selection of brews, which made us the talk of the
town.
